Liberal Democrats select Steve Darling to fight for Torbay at General Election
Liberal Democrat candidate Steve Darling will be campaigning for action to tackle the cost of living crisis, the NHS crisis, and the sewage scandal.
Torbay saw over 4,000 hours of sewage dumping along its coastline last year and Steve is campaigning to stop this. As a keen kayaker, our seas are incredibly important to Steve, which led to him campaigning over the last year for better water company regulation and increased taxation of their profits.
The last local elections saw gains for the Liberal Democrats in bellwether areas of Torbay like St Marychurch and Roundham with Hyde. Within the constituency, there are 15 Lib Dem councillors, 7 Conservative councillors, and no Labour or Green representatives. It is set to be a straight fight between the Lib Dems and Conservatives here in Torbay.
The Liberal Democrats are on the up after beating the Conservatives at the May local elections and winning four stunning parliamentary by-election victories since the last General Election.
Responding to Rishi Sunak calling a General Election, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Torbay, Steve Darling said:
“For years, Torbay has been taken for granted by an out-of-touch Conservative Government that has failed to get the basics right and lurched from crisis to crisis - now it’s time for a change.
“Local health services have been brought to their knees, people’s mortgages and rent have skyrocketed and water companies have been allowed to pump their filthy sewage across Torbay's world-renowned coastline. All this by a Conservative government more interested in fighting among themselves than standing up for the country.
“For too long, Torbay has been let down. This election is our chance to finally get the change we need - and the fair deal we deserve."
