Torbay's "Dental Desert": MP Steve Darling Highlights Dire State of Dental Care
In a recent Westminster Hall debate, Torbay's Liberal Democrat MP Steve Darling shed light on the alarming state of dental care in the area, referring to it as a "dental desert." The situation is characterised by:
- 2,200 people on the dental waiting list: This number doesn't include those who have given up on even trying to register for NHS dental care.
- Over half of adults haven't seen a dentist in two years: Access to routine dental care is severely limited.
- Over a third of children haven't seen a dentist in a year: Children's dental health is being neglected.
Steve has been approached by numerous constituents struggling to access dental treatment. One resident was left with a dental procedure only half-done when her dentist withdrew from NHS services. Another, Kirstie, who is at high risk for mouth cancer, is unable to get the necessary three-monthly check-ups due to a lack of NHS dental availability and the inability to afford private care. This has led to severe depression and the need for medication.
Liberal Democrats Propose Plan to Save Dentistry
The Liberal Democrats have outlined a comprehensive plan to address the dental crisis:
- Guarantee access to NHS dentists for urgent and emergency care: This includes bringing dentists back from the private sector.
- Introduce an emergency scheme for free check-ups for eligible groups: Prioritise those most in need.
- Guarantee appointments for those needing dental checks before medical procedures: Ensure comprehensive patient care.
- Prevent tooth decay through supervised toothbrushing programs in schools and nurseries: Promote good oral hygiene from a young age.
- Remove VAT on children's toothbrushes and toothpaste: Make oral care products more affordable for families.

"The situation in Torbay is unacceptable. Residents are suffering needlessly due to a lack of access to basic dental care. The Liberal Democrats' plan will address these urgent issues and ensure that everyone can receive the dental care they need."
