WASPI compensation: 6,930 women in Torbay “betrayed” by Government decision
Steve Darling, Liberal Democrat MP for Torbay, has said they vowed “to continue to fight for WASPI women” as data reveals that an estimated 6,930 women in the Torbay constituency could be affected.
The Government has announced that it will not compensate women hit by changes to the state pension age, despite backing campaigners in opposition, with Steve saying that they have been “betrayed” and calling the decision “simply wrong”.
Data from the House of Commons Library, using population estimates, indicates that 6,930 in the Torbay constituency could be impacted by the decision.
Steve has called on the Government to “urgently change course and rethink this shameful decision.”
Commenting on the data, Steve added:
“These shocking figures show that thousands of people in Torbay have been betrayed by the Government’s decision to not compensate WASPI women. This is simply wrong.
“The Government has turned its back on millions of women who were wronged through no fault of their own, ignoring the independent Ombudsman’s recommendations, and that is frankly disgraceful.
“The Conservatives left our economy in a shambles, but pensioners shouldn’t be asked to pay the price. The Liberal Democrats will fight for WASPI women in Torbay, and the Government must urgently change course and rethink this shameful decision.”
